If you’re an uncompromising collector of antique technology, make sure to check out all my listings after you look at this one. I don’t think you’ll find a better, broader or more balanced assortment of technical antiques anywhere — hundreds of listings each year, almost all of them featuring eye-popping “gee whiz” gadgetry in exceptional original condition. Here’s a beautiful, working Atwater Kent Model 4 radio on a Reinhard style breadboard. The board is made of a composite material and has beveled edges on all sides, with conical feet on the underside. Unlike the Minneapolis breadboards made in 1922, there are no binding posts on the top of the board for battery connections; all of the connections are made directly to the TA island, with connections for ground and antenna made to the Vario-Coupler on the far left end of the board. Condition is excellent, and the parts are some of the earliest radio parts that were manufactured by AK, with black knobs, black dials, and black backing plates. This makes the radio particularly striking because the breadboard is also black. All of the chocolate brown bakelite is in excellent condition, with no chips, no cracks, no issues. The engraved numbers and hash marks on the Vario-Coupler and Mounted Variometer are crisp and clear. The wire on the tuners is still tightly wound, and there are no stains anywhere. The paint on the TA island is original and in excellent condition, and both of the AF transformers inside the TA island are original, with good windings. All of the brass binding post nuts are original and correct, with tarnish consistent with age and authenticity. Comes with 3 brass base, tipped 01A tubes that have strong emissions and their original RCA paper labels still affixed to the sides of their glass envelopes. They’re the tubes you see in the pictures and see/hear in the video. To operate the radio, you’ll need a DC power supply, a longwire outdoor antenna (approximately 120 feet long 15 feet off the ground), and some experience at the helm of an inductively-tuned 1920’s battery radio. The radio is “twitchy” and challenging to tune, and if you haven’t had much experience with an early 20’s set, you’re going to find it difficult if not impossible to get it working.
